Salvatore Piermarini begins to take photographs and to dedicate himself
to photographic reporting in 1967. The recurring themes of his work at
this time are the photography of social engagement, contemporary art,
architecture and the urban transformations of the metropolitan
landscape, portraits, still-lifes, the theatre and the world of
culture.
To his observation of reality he joins a constant research into the
history of photography and into the potentialities of its language. From the early 70s he frequents the world of the artistic avant-garde,
photographing artists and their work. In 1981 is identified in
Time-Life Photography Year as belonging to the new wave.
He is the author of numerous publications, and over the years has
collaborated with various public and private institutions,
participating in prestigious exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His
published works include: Melissa (La Casa Usher, Firenze 1979), Photography Year 1981 (Time-Life, New York 1981), Arte Italiana 1960-82 (Electa Milano/Londra 1982), Le strade di casa (Mazzotta, Milano 1983), Lo sguardo di New York (La Casa Usher, Firenze 1990), Inventario Mediterraneo Monteleone, Vibo Valentia 2001), Le navi che volano (Monteleone, Vibo Valentia 2002), Le magnifiche rovine (Monteleone, Vibo Valentia 2004 -Maida Award for the better reportage-).
His current projects are: a collection of photos on 'genius of the
place', a selection of his work on the theme of the glance and a cycle
on the theme of 'figure and fiction'.
